The original Nivo v1 hardware, pictured above, will work just fine with most of the procedures outlined on this site. There are, however, some important differences:

The maximum screen resolution is 1024x768.
This means that the image may look better when connected to a 15" LCD screen than when connected to a larger one, though most monitors will scale the image without difficulty. It also means that the desktop session to which it is connected should be 1024x768 rather than the default 1280x1024. One way to set the resolution is described in the ndiyoadmin section.
The maximum colour depth is 16 bits.
This compares with 24 bits on the newer models. This will not be an issue for most normal users, and the software will do the appropriate conversion automatically.
The Nivo 1 does not display its IP address.
It can show its MAC address when first connected, but the ability to display an IP address received through DHCP was added at a later date. The on-screen display described in the section on connecting up the hardware will be rather different.
The Nivo will show a red screen if the network cable is not connected, which turns black once the ethernet signal is seen. One of the two indicator lights (usually coloured green) will light when a DHCP address has been received. You can then determine the IP address, if wanted, using the command:
nivo2vnc -locate
Scrollwheels on mice are not supported.
A scrollwheel will, however, work correctly as a middle button.
